The placing of the horizon deserves careful attention during composition. The most conventional position is approximately a third of the way up or down the picture but, there are good reasons for breaking this convention. If the horizon is low in the frame, it emphasizes the sky, which would be appropriate if, for instance, the pattern of clouds were a strong visual element. Positioning the horizon in the middle of the frame is usually the least satisfactory solution, except of course, in special circumstance, such as a very clear, mirror-like reflection in water. If placed high, it concentrates attention on details of the landscape, particularly in the foreground, and also gives a more enclosed feeling to the landscape.
